Intern Writer

If you have some pretty snazzy writing skills, have written for a blog or a newspaper, or just like whipping out poetry or prose, consider joining our team as an intern staff writer. We are always looking for more essays, fiction, poetry, and commentaries to fill our pages.

 

Here's the deal: You write for 3 (three) issues of the Life Matters Journal. It's a 6 (six) month term with your articles appearing in every other issue, and others potentially appearing on the blog. The article subjects will be chosen and developed with the help of our Executive Editor, and writing submissions will be subject to a collaborative editing process. The internship period lasts for one year, and to successfully complete the internship would also mean finishing all four pieces of writing.

Intern Photographer

 

If you have some pretty out-of-this-world photography skills, have photographed for a website or a newspaper, or just like whipping out controversial photo commentary, consider joining our team as an intern photographer. We are always looking for more photos and corresponding pictures to fill our pages and to use for online media.

 

Here's the deal: You submit 120 of your original photographs (20/month) for use in our web and hardcopy works. The internship period lasts for 6 (six) months, and to successfully complete the internship would mean the complete submission of all 240 photographs.

Intern Blogger

 

If you have some pretty rad writing skills, have written for a blog or a newspaper, or just like whipping up commentaries and quick bites for the online world, consider joining our team as an intern blogger. We are always looking for a more interactive online presence to engage our readers.

Here's the deal: You write for 6 (six) months of the Life Matters Journal online blog. It's a 6 (six) month term, which would provide us with 12-13 blog posts under your authorship. The internship period lasts for six months, and to successfully complete the internship would mean blogging at least once bi-weekly (every other week) for the Life Matters Journal blog. Topics must be related to life issues, but would be open to your discretion.

Do you want to spend your summer in service of the most vulnerable: the aborted, bombed, executed and euthanized? Do you want to grow your experience working with a premier pro-life and pro-peace organization?  We are growing - and we need young people with fresh ideas to contribute to our necessary work in changing hearts and minds for peace and all life.

 

There are 2-4 possible positions available, and there is one internship period - June 1 to August 1. We can be flexible with arrival dates, however, if you would like to arrive and begin work sooner or later. Priority of consideration will be given to applicants who can stay for a full two months.

Summer Internships (in Pgh!)

Rehumanize International needs a self-directed Fall Intern who can do social media, office management, and more. They will help us organize and plan for our annual conference and assist our Director of Communications and Executive Director.​

 

Education & Experience:

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's-in-progress (minimum) preferred.

  • Management experience preferred.

Job Requirements:​

  • Position is located at our Pittsburgh, PA "home office."

  • Position begins in September and continues til December (with a 1-week "Fall Break" included). 

  • Position is flexible: on your own hours for a portion of the workweek.

  • Manage a team of event liaisons to coordinate the conference event.

  • Ability to work on one's own, without immediate oversight.

Fall Internships (in Pgh!)

Director of Compliance & Development (Full Time in Pgh)

Rehumanize International needs a highly motivated, passionate, and organized individual to join our team in Pittsburgh. They will help us organize and plan our fundraising and financial development as we grow, and help us maintain compliance with state and federal agencies.

 

SUMMARY

The Director of Compliance & Development works in partnership with the Executive Director, other staff, and the Board of Directors to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization by upholding and overseeing the legal compliance of the organization in relation to the state(s) in which Rehumanize International works, and to create fundraising and development plans which shall engender a truly human-centered working environment for our team members. The Director of Compliance & Development shall also help write relevant legal material for white papers, educate team members on HR procedures, and help solicit partnerships from related organizations for our annual conference.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Develop and maintain relationships with sponsors and financial partners, and support fundraising by providing contacts to staff and board as needed.

  • Spearhead creative fundraising drives, coordinating with outreach and media branches to curate material, and bring community into sponsorship level commitment.

  • Employ legal understanding to maintain compliance with state(s) governments in the realm of fundraising, HR, and tax policy.

  • Contribute legal knowledge and research to organizational white papers and books. 


 

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

 

  • Passion and commitment to mission and goals of Rehumanize International.

  • Aptitude in fundraising and development, from interpersonal to large appeals, including grant writing and review procedures.

  • Proficient in Excel or other spreadsheet software.

  • Knowledge of budgeting practices and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn legal requirements involved in nonprofit management, HR, and solicitation compliance.

  • A familiarity with issues regarding human dignity, social advocacy, and the Consistent Life Ethic.

  • The ability to conceive, develop, and complete tasks without close supervision. 

  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong presentation, oral, and written communication skills.  


 

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT
 

  • FUNDRAISING & DEVELOPMENT
    Will work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to create quarterly, bi-annual, and annual plans and goals for funding and financial planning through relationships with potential and current donors. Additionally, will maintain relationships with sponsors, and keep other executive team members in touch with donors to continue expressing their narrative, work, and gratitude to supporters.

     

  • COMPLIANCE & HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
    Will work with the Executive Director to ensure legal compliance with relevant state(s) laws, work with insurance providers for required workers’ comp insurance, and shall further develop and maintain a human-centered workplace through pertinent HR procedures, including payroll maintenance and team building. Additionally, will also be responsible for planning and running monthly staff meetings, for sending out the quarterly internal peer-review reminders, and for arranging our reviews with grantor foundations.

     

  • LEGAL WRITING & RESEARCH
    Will work with Executive Director and Director of Outreach & Education to research and write on relevant legal precedents and statutes when necessary for the development of an educational piece (including in white papers and books).

     

  • GRANT WRITING & REVIEW PLANNING
    Will work with the Executive Director to research potential grantor foundations, write LOIs and grant proposals, and complete grant reviews after proposals have been granted.

     

  • DAY-OF CONFERENCE ORGANIZER
    Will work with the relevant team members to ensure that everything for the conference is in order and prepared for a smooth weekend of events. Additionally, will be the contact person for all speakers, conference partners, and attendees if they have any questions pertaining to conference logistics.

Office Assistant (3-5 hrs/week    in Pgh)

SUMMARY

 

The Office Assistant works 3-5 hours per week in partnership with the Pittsburgh-based staff to maintain the organization of the office by working on small but vital tasks that are crucial to the continued existence of the organization.


 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Maintaining webstore inventory by counting stock at regular intervals, filling orders from the website, and shipping and mailing orders in a timely fashion.

  • Filing receipts and monthly paperwork into the filing system of the organization, thereby keeping the workspace clean and tidy.

  • Maintaining our web email audience and quarterly fundraising mailing lists by regularly inputting new addresses into the organized system for mailings.

  • Assisting the Executive Director, Director of Outreach, and any other staff with relevant tasks within the scope of experience.


 

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

 

  • Passion and commitment to mission and goals of Rehumanize International.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word or other similar word processing program.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel or other similar database program.

  • A familiarity with issues regarding human dignity, social advocacy, and the Consistent Life Ethic.

  • The ability to follow instructions and complete tasks without close supervision. 


 

The Office Assistant must be based in the Pittsburgh region, and must be able to come into the office at least 3-5 hours each week. Hours are flexible, but must be completed in-office. This position is open to people of all ages 18+ and all skill levels.

Volunteer opportunities

We have various opportunities over the course of the year for friends and supporters who may not be able to devote time for an internship or a full-time position but who still want to give a helping hand.

Sometimes, these are in-person gigs for folks in Pittsburgh, DC, California, or elsewhere. Sometimes, they are remote volunteer opportunities varying from design feedback, website help, and sharing our materials and messaging.

We accept everything from news commentary to comics, artwork to fiction, essays to media reviews -- if you have something that you think relates to our mission of education and discourse on human life and dignity or any of our "life matters," please consider submitting your idea to our editor here!

 

If it touches on the abolition of aggressive violence: abortion, capital punishment, torture, euthanasia, embryonic stem-cell research, abuse, human trafficking, suicide, unjust war, or any other life issue, we'd like to hear what you have to say and consider your piece for publication.

 

Life Matters Journal has a brief style guide that our team has worked hard to compile in order to produce a cohesive publication. Please read our style guide and format your submissions accordingly. 

All of our writers have the opportunity to be paid a $40 stipend per article that is accepted.

Additionally, we are always looking for patrons for specific topics for our magazine. If you would like to support our publication by sponsoring articles on any of our related issues, please visit our patronage page.

 
Contracted Staff Writer

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide content for both Life Matters Journal (print) and The Rehumanize International Blog (digital).

    • Two (2) pieces of writing per month, on current events or salient topics to human dignity, as discussed with the Executive Editor.

  • Writing will be copy-edited and properly formatted on submission.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.

  • Background in journalism or discursive and academic writing preferred.

  • An adherence to and understanding of the principles of the Consistent Life Ethic.

  • The ability to conceive, develop, and complete plans without close supervision.
     

JOB REQUIREMENTS & PERKS:

  • Position is remote: you may work from wherever you live.

  • One year commitment of writing two articles monthly,

    • You may remain retained indefinitely after one year and a review if both parties wish to continue the contract.

  • Staff writers are legally freelancers; while no salary is provided, Life Matters Journal compensates writers and columnists through an honorarium for each piece published.
