The Remarkable 60 Year Struggle of Carol Crossed
Carol Crossed has been showing up for sixty years.
In the summer of 1965, at Howard University, Carol started her 60 year struggle for civil and human rights. She has been a leader in nonviolent civil disobedience since the 1970s movement against the Vietnam War. Carol stood with Indigenous communities in South America, participated in the US Rescue movement, and advanced a nonviolent feminist struggle across the Consistent Life Ethic. Through it all, Carol’s commitment to using her talents and opportunities to help others rise with her is what makes her a trailblazer in building bridges between social justice movements.
A Career Built on Showing Up
Carol spent fifteen years as an editorial assistant at The New York State Feminist, edited Voices for Peace and Life, and contributed to Pro-Life Feminism: Yesterday and Today. In the midst of all of this, she bought a house in 2006 that the world had mostly forgotten about in Adams, Massachusetts. Through her sacrifice and vision, the birthplace of Susan B. Anthony was restored and opened as a museum.
What a Legacy Sounds Like Out Loud
This is a cornerstone to Carol Crossed’s North Star legacy: Building things that outlast a single campaign, trend, or shift in power. Her steady perseverance teaches us resiliency and hope in a more just and peace-filled world. She has not only overcome the glass ceiling, but at every opportunity Carol is the one to open doors for young people, women, and marginalized voices to flourish and lead in Consistent Life Ethic spaces.
But Carol is not a historical figure. She's still doing this work, still mentoring the next generation of organizers, still showing up even when it’s hard. As Vice President of Feminists Choosing Life of New York, she continues the nonviolent feminist struggle even in the midst of culture wars trying to erase pro-life feminist voices.
A Special Way to Say Thank You
On October 16th, as a special event for this year’s Rehumanize Conference, we are throwing Carol an appreciation dinner. There will be food, testimonies, and an inspiring line up of speakers. The night will conclude with a Fireside Karaoke After Party! Our hope is that this night of celebrating will energize us for the next 2 days at the conference.
